Description
LEAD BATTERY SCRAP are a major source of lead scrap for recycling in the United States and around the world. Discarded lead-acid batteries and associated scrap from manufacturing facilities account for more than 90% of the lead available for recycling. Used car batteries account for about 85% of lead-acid battery waste. Other recycled waste materials include telephone and electrical cable casings, lead pipes and sheets, ballast (especially car and truck wheel weights), anodes, compressed metal, slag, tailings, sludge and dust.
Discarded lead-acid batteries account for only about half of the remaining lead used in recycling plants in Europe and much of the rest of the world. Layers of scrap cable, lead sheet and pipe, and various metal scraps account for a much higher percentage of incoming scrap to recyclers in these countries than in the United States. As the number of vehicles increases, the remaining amount of lead-acid batteries will also increase.
